Third grade Explorations focuses on two units of study: The Heart & Healthy Living and Building a Business: Toys & Games. A description of each unit can be found below.
The Heart and Healthy Living
This interdisciplinary unit allows students to investigate and examine the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. This study will begin with an exploration through the anatomy and physiology of the heart, as it functions within the circulatory system. Students will gain an understanding of how a healthy heart functions, research diseases of the heart, blood, and lungs, and comprehend the wide range of treatments available. Speakers with expertise in CPR, artificial heart valves, and nutrition will help the students explore the work of cardiac care and the treatments available. The culminating activity will be a heart dissection with the aide of an expertise in the medical field and parents.
Building a Business: Toys & Games
Utilizing higher level thinking skills and problem-solving strategies, students will develop an understanding of the American free enterprise system related to the toys and games industry. Students will investigate popular toys of past decades and discover how toys reflect the environment of each decade through interviews, panel discussions, and research. Students will also determine the popular toy of today by surveying peer groups and analyzing the results. Based on the findings, students will develop:
