2nd Grade Math
Second grade TAG math students receive math instruction in the TAG classroom daily from 8:00-9:00am. The math curriculum is accelerated and enriched with a heavy emphasis on problem-solving. Mentoring Mathematical Minds, a researched-based mathematics program written for gifted students, is our primary resource and enVision is used as a support resource. Students are provided challenging, engaging, hands-on math lessons in the classroom that create an enthusiasm for learning. The lessons are designed to provide relevance for the students and a real-world connection that will create a passion for mathematics. Students work independently, with partners, and in cooperative groups for concept development and project-based learning experiences that offer complexity and depth of meaning.

2nd Grade Explorations
Second grade Explorations focuses on two units of study: Innovation Celebration and Curiosity Expedition. A brief description of each unit can be found below.
Innovation Celebration
This is an interdisciplinary social studies, math, science, and language arts unit that allows students to investigate the process of innovative thinking by examining reasons that society calls for certain inventions during certain times, and promotes creative thinking, deductive reasoning, and problem-solving. Students will learn the creative stages of innovative thinking and produce inventions. They will become acquainted with young established inventors, identify the need in society for invention, and develop an idea, design and prototype. During an "Innovation Celebration", students will celebrate the spirit of invention.
Curiosity Expedition
"Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning." William Arthur Ward
This interdisciplinary unit gives students the opportunity to explore a subject for which they have a personal and specific interest. Students brainstorm possibilities, prioritize their interest lists, and select the topic that best sparks their curiosity. This "Expedition" is the catalyst for research with a variety of techniques and tools, and offers an opportunity for personal expression, as students create products that showcase their learning. The culmination of this study is a presentation, allowing students to share the richness of their experience with an audience of parents and peers.
