1949: Hyer School opens, delayed by a steel shortage from WWII

Hyer Elementary School opened on January 24, 1949, to serve the rapidly growing Highland Park and University Park communities following World War II. Named in honor of Dr. Robert Stewart Hyer, the founding president of Southern Methodist University, the school has provided generations of students with a strong foundation in academics, character, and community involvement.
Construction of the original campus was delayed due to wartime material shortages, but the school quickly became an important part of HPISD's expanding elementary program. Over the decades, Hyer has remained known for strong parent involvement, student achievement, and community traditions.
As part of the 2015 Bond Program, the campus was completely rebuilt to provide modern learning environments, enhanced safety features, and flexible instructional spaces. The new Hyer Elementary School opened in 2017 and continues to serve future generations of Huskies.
